I'm doing a little reading tonight. I couldn't resist putting this up.
"What education may not have accomplished is usually done by social pressure in later life. If you do not smile you are judged lacking in a pleasing personality and you need to have a pleasing personality if you want to sell your services, whether as a waitress, a salesman or a physician. Only those at the bottom of the social pyramid who sell nothing but their physical labour and those at the very top do not need to be particularly pleasant. Friendliness, cheerfulness and everything that a smile is supposed to express become automatic responses which one turns on and off like an electric switch."
Fortune Magazine, September 1940
Have a nice day!
One may think that since the smile has become an automatic response, it may lack value or become void of essence. However, i like to think that the fact that people even bother to turn the switch on, despite the need to be constantly cheerful even if they are not, is worth something. Don't you?
ReplyDeleteYou have very interesting posts. I'll be reading regularly. Cheers!
The smile, as a reflex action is bereft of human emotion and often used as a marketable tool of emotional manipulation. I would much rather encounter a human who does not wear a mask, and who expresses their true feelings on their face, whether positive or negative.
ReplyDeleteI think we have been trained to smile, and it ends up offering just as much insight into our true nature as a dolphin jumping through a hoop.
That being said, dolphins do like to jump!
Mera Pakistan thanks wow ..great joke
